Every year between the final week of January and the first week of February, the Kannawidan Festival is held. It is the Ilocanos' way of thanking the Almighty for both their many bounties and the province's rich legacy, which includes their close-knit familial relationships. Kannawidan means "nakaugalian" or "tradition" in Tagalog. This festival was established to highlight the rich culture of the province in a variety of areas, including the arts, agriculture, music, food, and more. It is customary for a mass to be celebrated at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral during the festival's official opening. Then, it is followed by a procession
of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary around Vigan City.
The events in Kannawidan are plenty. A pageant that took place in February is included in this. Ms. Vigan City won the title of Ms. Ilocos Sur 2023 and took home the crown. 1
The other contenders, though, were also highly intelligent and performed admirably on the pageant night. Additionally, a street dancing competition, featured participants from various municipalities of Ilocos Sur.
Lastly, there was a float parade where individuals from several communities in Ilocos Sur created intriguing and distinctive floats. Jerry Singson, the Governor, was seen riding a float that resembled a calesa in this parade.
This festival clearly proven the uniqueness of Ilocanos. You can tell how creative and gifted they are. Their artistic abilities significantly contributed to the vibrant and exciting atmosphere of this festival. Bright smiles were evident during the events, as is expected of Ilocanos. Everyone was extremely excited and delighted.
